⚡ Quick Answer

4U (80–84g) is the most popular weight for club players — light enough for fast swings, heavy enough for powerful smashes. 3U (85–89g) suits advanced singles players who need raw power. 5U (75–79g) is ideal for doubles specialists who prioritise speed over power.

⚙️ How Weight Affects Your Game

🌀

Momentum & Smash Power

Heavier rackets carry more momentum into the shuttle. A 3U racket generates roughly 12% more smash force than a 5U at the same swing speed — that's the difference between a winning and a returnable smash.

Swing Speed & Reaction

Every 5g reduction in racket weight increases swing speed by approximately 3–4%. In doubles, where rallies can involve 10+ shots in 5 seconds, a lighter 5U racket gives you a measurable edge in reaction time.

💪

Arm Fatigue Over 3 Games

Bangalore summer matches in 34°C heat are brutal. A 3U racket weighs roughly 20% more than a 5U — that difference compounds over 200+ swings per match. Heavier rackets cause significantly more elbow and shoulder strain.

Why 4U Dominates at Bangalore Club Level

At our Densports store in TC Palya, over 70% of rackets we sell to club players from Indiranagar, Koramangala, and Whitefield are 4U weight. It's not a coincidence — 4U is the perfect weight for Bangalore's playing conditions.

Bangalore's courts are mostly indoor wood or synthetic — fast surfaces that reward quick movement. Our summer heat means arm fatigue kicks in earlier than in cooler cities. And most club players here play both singles and doubles in the same session. 4U at 80–84g handles all three factors perfectly.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does racket weight include the string and grip?

A: No. The weight class (2U, 3U, 4U etc.) refers to the unstrung racket frame only. Add approximately 5–7g for strings and 8–12g for the grip. A 4U racket (80–84g unstrung) will weigh around 95–100g fully strung and gripped — which is the weight you actually swing.

Q: Can adding an overgrip change the weight class?

A: Not the class, but it does add 5–8g to the handle end. This shifts the balance point slightly head-light and makes the racket feel lighter in hand — a useful trick for players who want the power of a 3U but the feel of a 4U.

Q: Is a heavier racket always better for smashing?

A: Only if you can swing it fast enough. A 3U racket swung slowly generates less smash force than a 4U swung fast. The optimal smash comes from matching your swing speed to the right weight — not just picking the heaviest option.

Q: Does Densports let me try different weight rackets before buying?

A: Yes. At our TC Palya store, our staff will let you hold and compare rackets of different weights before you buy. We also provide a basic swing speed assessment to help narrow down your ideal weight class. Walk in anytime — no appointment needed.
